Canadian Blood Services is a national not-for-profit charitable organization that manages the blood supply in all Canadian provinces and territories (except Québec) and oversees OneMatch the Stem Cell and Marrow Network (www.onematch.ca). A dedicated team of 4,800 staff and 17,000 volunteers enable Canadian Blood Services to operate 40 permanent collection sites and more than 20,000 donor clinics annually.
Saint John has a permanent blood donor clinic at 405 University Avenue. Regular hours for blood collection are Mondays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Whole blood can be donated every 56 days.
For businesses in the Saint John area who would like to encourage "life-saving" at work, Canadian Blood Services offers a "LifeBus". This service provides transportation to and from a work site for an organization with a minimum of four employees interested in donating blood. The time away from work is approximately one hour. Plasma and platelets are also collected at the Saint John location. Plasma can be donated as often as every six days while platelets can be donated every two weeks. These programs have varied hours and anyone interested in finding out more may call Cathy Anderson at 648-5010.
While Canadian Blood Services is a non-governmental organization, it receives operational funding from the Provincial and Territorial Ministers of Health, and is regulated by Health Canada.
