The Cherry Brook Zoo ? Background

The Cherry Brook Zoo has been part of the Great Saint John area for over 27 years beginning as a private facility in Garnett Settlement in 1974 and relocating and opening in its present location in Rockwood Park in June 1978. It the first nationally accredited Zoo in Atlantic Canada and one of only approximately 22 accredited facilities in Canada. By having this accreditation standard, the Cherry Brook Zoo operates under high standards and under the mandates of a professional code of ethics.

The Cherry Brook Zoo is operated by Chief Administrative Director Len Collrin and Director Zoo Development/ Primatologist Lynda Collrin. The zoo is governed by an elected board of trustees for the community. Lynda Collrin was educated as a Primatologist who has undertaken research in several areas, including the rejection, Hand-rearing and Re-Introduction of the Sulwasie Macaque, a study that took eight years to complete. This study earned the Zoo a National Award of Merit for Research in 1985.

The Cherry Brook Zoo works in conjunction with UNBSJ for credit programs in biology. It is a teaching facility and also works in unison with many Canadian universities. The placement of students is recognized as a fulfillment of prerequisites for entrance in Dalhousie University for medical students, the University of Guelph and the University of Prince Edward Island for veterinary students and animal health technicians and the Agricultural College of Nova Scotia for all students.

Over the years the Zoo has become involved with many Species Survival programs beginning with the Siberian Tiger, the Callimico Goeldi and the Golden Lion Tamarin. The Cherry Brook is one of only two facilities in Canada to become designated breeders of the Tamarin for release back to the wild.

The Cherry Brook Zoo also works in international research and based on several years of observational research discovered a medical abnormality in the Golden Lion Tamarin which lead to the start of a global research study headed by the Cherry Brook Zoo in conjunction with the University of New Brunswick.
