Saint John Area Youth Presented With Scholarship from Future Shop and Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada

A Saint John area youth was presented with a Future Shop Future Leaders Scholarship during a special celebration on August 14 at a local Future Shop store with his family, friends and representatives from Boys and Girls Club of Saint John and Future Shop on hand to celebrate. Scott McKinnon is among the 25 recipients from across Canada who received a $4,000 scholarship to help them pursue their dreams of post-secondary education.

“Future Shop is committed to investing in creating positive opportunities for young people and together with Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada we have helped hundreds of young people over the past ten years realize their dream of post-secondary education,” said Cheryl Grant, Community Relations Manager, Future Shop. “Through the Future Shop Future Leaders Scholarships we have improved the lives of youth and families across the country, and we will continue to make a difference through the upcoming Future Generation program.”

For ten years, the Future Shop Future Leaders Scholarships have been a national partnership between Future Shop and Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada to support the education dreams of youth. The program provides vital financial support at a time when tuition costs continue to rise. Since the program was created, 520 young people have received scholarships totaling more than $1.5 million.

Scott McKinnon received a $3,500 or $3,000 cash award along with a $500 or $1,000 Future Shop gift card to provide needed technology and school equipment. Recipients of the Future Shop Future Leaders Scholarships are selected based on their outstanding contribution to their Boys and Girls Club and local community, good academic standing and financial need.

Building on the ten year success of the Future Shop Future Leaders Scholarships, Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada and Future Shop have developed a new program, Future Generation, which will launch later in 2010. An evolution of the Future Shop Future Leaders Scholarships, Future Generation will aim to provide young people in Grade 10 with the financial resources to achieve their long term education goals and the skills and technology needed to be truly successful.

Bio of Scott McKinnon

Scott has been an extremely active participant within the Boys and Girls Club of Saint John for over 7 years.  He has been a youth member and volunteer and has been involved with Keystone, both the Provincial and National youth councils, chair of the National Youth Conference planning committee and now as a club staff member as well.  Aside from all the good work Scott does for the club, he is also highly involved in his community – volunteering with several organizations/projects.  He is a well-mannered, articulate, intelligent young man who is well respected by his peers and co-workers.  Scott is entering his fourth year of studies at the University of New Brunswick in mathematics and continuing on to his Bachelor of Education so that he can continue to serve as a positive role model for children and youth.

The Chase is On!
Saint John residents challenged to hunt, climb and paddle for liver disease

Kristen Wheaton is challenging the community of Saint John to hunt, climb and paddle to help people with liver disease. On August 22, 2010, Kristen is hosting  The Amazing Chase for Liver Race, a fundraising event in Rockwood Park in support of the Canadian Liver Foundation.

Beginning at the Lily Lake Pavilion at noon, participants will embark on the first leg of their race with a geo-caching adventure throughout Rockwood Park.  Where they will be challenging themselves and other teams in rock climbing and paddling challenges. Once they have finished the race, competitors and supporters will enjoy a Barbecue Party at Lily Lake.

Host Kristen Wheaton is living with a rare Liver disease called Primary Sclerosing Colangitis (or PSC) and is currently on the waiting list for a liver transplant. “I’m now 26 years old and when I was diagnosed at 23 I didn’t know anything about Liver Disease or its symptoms. With the support of my family and friends, I know I will make it through a transplant and I want to join others in the goal of finding a cure for these life altering diseases.”  She hopes her story will inspire others to get involved in the event and to learn more about liver disease for the sake of their own health and their families.

Kristen hopes to recruit 80 teams at $100 per team with proceeds going to support her fundraising goal for the Give’r for Liver marathon team in 2011. The Canadian Liver Foundation’s national Give’r for Liver program in partnership with the Running/Walking Room provides training to team members wanting to fundraise for liver health while participating in national and international marathons.  “I am looking forward to forming new friendships and feeling the satisfaction of finishing a marathon while at the same time raising funds for research and increasing awareness of liver disease”. The Amazing Chase for Liver Race is also a first step toward another of Kristen’s goals - starting a local chapter for the Canadian Liver Foundation here in Saint John.

The Canadian Liver Foundation (CLF) mandate is to promote liver health and to reduce the incidence and impact of all liver disease. To achieve this goal, the CLF works through volunteers and chapters across the country to improve public awareness and understanding of liver health and liver disease, raise funds for research and education programs.

The Amazing Chase for Liver Race will take place from 1:00pm to 4:00pm on August 22, 2010. Teams and individuals wishing to register for The Amazing Chase for Liver Race can visit www.amazingchase4liver.ca or call 506-333-7955 or email amazingchase@liver.ca for more information. Those interested can also seek more information by phoning the Canadian Liver Foundation Atlantic Canada Regional Office 1-866-423-8538 or email atlantic@liver.ca.

1st Annual “One Small Step” Walk

Are you a supporter of the community?  Would you take one small step to ease a child’s suffering?  Would you help our children?

Our children have a rare genetic disorder called Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS), which causes constant hunger, short stature and intellectual challenges.  Can you imagine living your life being constantly hungry no matter how much you eat?  The future of children with PWS has typically been morbid obesity, diabetes and a life filled with constant struggles and ending in early death.  We need your help to avoid this outcome.

The good news is modern research can find effective treatments and eventually a cure for PWS.  Unfortunately, research is expensive … but, you can help.  We will be hosting our 1st annual “One Small Step” Walk on Sunday, August 15, 2010 at Rockwood Park in Saint John (6th annual for Canada).  This event promotes health and fitness in all families.  Our event expects up to 100 people.  For sponsorship opportunity, please contact Jack Gardner for more information (Jackjgardner@hotmail.com)

In just 5 years, FPWS have raised over $600 000 to support research and are committed to make a difference in our children’s lives.  We know that every step we take leads us closer to the success our children deserve.  We would like you to consider a financial contribution or a donation product for our prize draws and/or loot bags.  We will be contacting you to discuss your involvement.  Together, with organizations like yours, we can make a better life for people living with PWS … one small step at a time.

For further information on our event or to make a donation please call us at 506-696-2161 or email us at Jackjgardner@hotmail.com  today.  For more information about PWS, please go to www.fpwr.ca .

Thank you for your help!

Sincerely,

Jack Gardner

About Prader-Willi Syndrome
Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a complex genetic disorder that occurs in approximately one out of every 12,000 births.  PWS is caused by a small deletion on the 15th chromosome.  The symptoms of PWS are varied and dramatic.  The most notable symptom is an insatiable hunger and most people with PWS are not able to control their food intake.  This constant hunger can lead to diabetes, morbid obesity and even death.  In addition to constantly being hungry, people with PWS may also suffer from short stature, small hands and feet, scoliosis, sleep disturbances, skin picking, speech apraxia/dyspraxia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, difficulty controlling emotions, cognitive delays and sterility.

About the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research, Canada
The Foundation for Prader-Willi Research Canada (FPWR Canada) is a registered charity (Official Registration Number: 855717385 RR0001) FPWR Canada is comprised of parents, families, researchers, and others interested in addressing issues related to Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) and childhood obesity. Founded in 2006 by parents of children with PWS, the mission of the FPWRC is to eliminate the challenges of PWS through the advancement of research. Members of FPWRC believe that, through research, treatments will be found that will lessen the restrictions placed on people with PWS. These advancements will provide those with the syndrome an opportunity to lead more independent lives.  All proceeds support PWS research.

Message from Barry Ogden - Request for Spruce Trees

For the past twenty years I have planted trees around the city , sometimes alone sometimes with students and companies. This year I would like to see more trees planted with the Marigolds, especially spruce so we can have green year round. If you know of any companies or groups that could work with students to green an area please let me know. I know we are in the shortest days of the year and the start of winter but I start raising funds for the Marigolds the day after Boxing Day!  The day historically set aside to put boxes of goods out for the poor.

Peace of the Season through out the year, lets end poverty, obesity, injustice and war and lets promote, opportunity, education, mental and physical good health, stewardship of the environment and co-operation.

PALS (Partners Assisting Local Schools)

PALS (Partners Assisting Local Schools) is an exciting initiative of School District 8 in partnership with the local business community and service agencies. It partners interested groups with local schools to provide support primarily in the form of volunteers.

Volunteers are the backbone of all PALS business-education partnerships. Employers contribute by freeing up employees to volunteer for up to one hour during the work week at their partner school. All volunteers are provided with screening, training and an orientation in preparation for their involvement.

Employers report that their employees feel they are getting back much more than they give after spending time with their young friends – whether as coaches, mentors, reading buddies, or breakfast volunteers to name but a few ways of being involved! It is definitely a win-win situation!

There are presently 16 PALS schools in School District 8. Each school identifies its volunteer needs and we try to partner either individuals or groups that can help fill that need. Some are in the initial stages of establishing PALS.
