Our Annual General Meeting is to be held in late June of this year, and at that meeting we are looking to appoint executive and board member at large positions. We are looking for business and fundraising leaders to come to the table to work with us in making a difference in our community. We would like to have representation from all the geographical areas we cover – Hampton, KV, Saint John, and Grand Bay-Westfield. Our Chapter has a strong history of working in the communities in and around Saint John to promote our mission to stop impaired driving and to support victims of this violent crime. Our top priorities are education and victim services. Every year we bring our Multi-Media presentations to local schools at all levels to educate our youth on the fatal consequences of impaired driving. Through our victim services volunteers we work one on one with families that have been affected by this violent crime - a crime that is 100% preventable. We have formed partnerships with both the Saint John Police Force, and the Rothesay Regional Police Force to work together towards fighting impaired driving. We were the 2nd MADD chapter in all of Canada to have 911 road signs erected in the KV area, in large part due to our partnership with the Rothesay Regional Police Force. Following the signs being erected in KV, Grand Bay-Westfield has erected and Saint John is erecting signs in their areas. Hampton is looking at a proposal to have signs placed as well. These signs instruct motorists to call 911 should they suspect an impaired driver. Every year we conduct Project Red Ribbon – distributing coin boxes around the city, that hold ribbons that can be tied to your car antenna or key chain. We also hold a major annual fundraiser called Strides for Change which is a 5km Walk and Wheelchair event. Our next Strides is coming up this June 7th at Rockwood Park/Fisher Lakes. Last year we had over 200 members of the community attend and walk – and we netted over $15K. In contrast to other national charities – every donor dollar that comes to the Saint John Chapter stays in our community! Any investment be it time or monetary stays in our community to educate youth, work with victims, promote public awareness, hold events etc. MADD Canada, including MADD Saint John & Area, is not government funded. We rely solely on donor dollars, grants, and fundraisers. To be able to keep our chapter alive and thriving we need the help of the business community – and would like you to distribute this e-mail to your members, so they may have a voice in our chapter. Thank you very much for your time, and should you have any please do not hesitate to contact us. Robin Young, Administrative Assistant/Volunteer & Lora Skead, President

Dear Friends, I'm participating in Walk for Muscular Dystrophy - 2008 to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. You can support me by making a secure online donation using your credit card. Click on the link below: http://my.e2rm.com/personalPage.aspx?SID=1757342 I am pleased once again to be the National Lead for this great event, as well as a participant in the festivities to be held in Saint John. Muscular Dystrophy Canada means so much to so many people throughout our great country. By making a donation, you will be providing support to purchase much needed medical and rehabilitation equipment, fund leading edge research and improve the quality of life of people who are impacted by one of over a hundred disorders through the support, education, advocacy and information provided by Muscular Dystrophy Canada. A specific example of how important your donation is can be demonstrated by something as simple as helping to buy a wheelchair. My wheelchair expense is in excess of $50,000 and I need a new one of these every five years. Receiving no direct support from government makes this an extraordinary burden on me and my family. Thanks to the work of Muscular Dystrophy Canada, this weight is lifted. I am where I am today, a tax paying, independent, contributing member of my community, because of the support of this great organization. Thank you in advance for your donation and I hope that you will join me on June 28th and have an even bigger impact in making muscles move. Jeff P.S. This event will be held at the prestigious Riverside Golf and Country Club on July 11th, 2008. The day will begin at 11:30am with registration where you will receive a fabulous registration package, followed by lunch, 18 holes of golf with a power car, a four-course dinner, door prizes, silent auction and the satisfaction each person will receive from knowing that they helped support the tremendous work of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick. Participants also have the opportunity to hit a hole in one and win a new car. As you may already know, cardiovascular diseases remain the most common cause of death amongst Canadians. They continue to be the costliest and most prevalent diseases in our province. We believe, with your help, that it is possible to reduce these alarming statistics by continuing to invest in our core funding priorities: research, health promotion, and advocacy. Big Bike Ride for Heart The Big Bike is built for 30 and is approximately the size of a school bus. It is traveling across New Brunswick from August 15th, 2008 to September 15th, 2008. We will be visiting more than 30 communities and over 2,000 riders will share in the amazing Big Bike experience. On event day participants ride approximately 2-3 kms, which takes approximately 20 minutes, through busy downtown streets in order to garner the most visibility possible. It’s more than just a bike and it’s more than just a ride, because when the Big Bike rolls through a community, it brings with it the support and hope of thousands across the country. It partners interested groups with local schools to provide support primarily in the form of volunteers. Volunteers are the backbone of any business-education partnership. Employers contribute people resources by freeing up employees to volunteer for up to one hour during the work week at their partner school. All volunteers are provided with screening, training and an orientation in preparation for their involvement. There are presently 8 PALS schools in School District 8. Each school identifies its needs and we try to partner a group that can help to fill that need. District 8 partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters to provide an In-School Mentoring Program at designated schools. Mentors are positive role models for 1 hour a week with a child during the school day. Presently, we are looking for interested people to volunteer as Mentors at Centennial School. If you and your business are interested in helping to brighten the future of some very wonderful young people, or to learn more about the PALS program, please contact: Deborah Fisher, PALS Coordinator, School District 8 fisher.deborah@jdirving.com TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes, June 8th, 2008, Market Square/Harbour Passage. On World Diabetes Day, November 14th, we kicked off our 2007/2008 TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes Campaign!!! It is a time when we encourage people to become involved with our Walk, and raise money to help us find a cure for Diabetes. Almost everyone knows someone who is affected by Diabetes, and we invite you to join us in our Campaign, from Research to Reality, the campaign to accelerate the cure for Diabetes. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is committed to finding a cure for Diabetes, our mission is to find a cure for diabetes and it’s complications through the support of research. JDRF is the leading charitable funder and advocate of Juvenile or Type 1 Diabetes worldwide. We have three major cure goals: restoring normal blood sugar, prevention and treatment of diabetes complications, and preventing diabetes. In Atlantic Canada over $600,000 was raised for diabetes research, and Saint John raised $81,000 of that amount. We would very much like to surpass that amount in 2008, and with your help we can do just that!!! There are many ways that you can become involved with the TELUS walk to Cure. The number one way is by entering a team. Teams can be put together by families, companies, or just a group of people who would like to raise money for a great cause!! Teams can raise money by getting pledges, or by fundraising from now until walk day. Fundraising can be fun and exciting for everyone involved, and provide great team spirit within any organization or family!! There are many other ways to become involved, such as sponsorship, or donations. The walk is a fun and exciting time for everyone!! So put your team together, and come and help us find a cure for diabetes!! Contact Kelly Hare at 763-0001, or khare @jdrf.ca. Also, visit our website at www.jdrf.ca,
