Jason Dow Benefit Auction
On March the 10th 2012 we will be hosting a benefit dance/auction in memory of Jason Dow who lost his life tragically. The purpose of the benefit is to raise funds to donate back into the education system in the form of a scholarship. Also, we are adding a theme to the benefit (anti bullying) to bring awareness to how severe this problem really is. We have engaged the community to take part in this event in hopes that the evening is a huge success. Our goal is to raise $10,000.00
With this in mind we are asking for your help. We realize there are many functions today that approach you and we will understand if you cannot support this event. However, if you can and are willing to donate an item to support our auction that would be fantastic. We will make it well know during our evening that your organization supported us. If you require more info please call 658 2920
Thank you so much in advance, Patrick & Marina The Dow Family

Curl for Mental Health On March 31st, 2012 we will be hosting our 22nd annual Curl for Mental Health event!
Can you believe it’s been 22 years? Wow! We are so appreciative of our community coming out year after year to help us raise funds for the programs and services that we offer. We couldn’t do it without everyone attending, and we couldn’t do it without the support of our wonderful sponsors. Thank you Molson Canada, CHSJ and The Wave radio stations, Domino’s Pizza, (once again Domino’s has agreed to provide lunch to the curlers, along with sponsoring the event!) We would be remiss if we didn’t profusely thank Thistle St. Andrews Curling Club as well for agreeing to let us use their facility for the curling.
There will be a ton of prizes. Last year we had over 60 businesses donate prizes to the event, and we hope that this year there is no stopping the generosity of our community! Register your team today!
Beginning at 10am, we promise a full day of curling, with two four-end games guaranteed. There is no experience necessary. Your loved ones can watch or participate. Four person teams required with a entry fee of $50 per person ($200 per team).
The music will be rocking, the place will be loud and wild, the day will go by amazingly fast because of all the excitement. And with door prizes galore, nearly everyone will leave with something!

Big Brothers Big Sisters 1 Year 100 Men Campaign
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saint John launched their vigorous year- long recruitment campaign called 1 Year 100 Men this morning. This campaign will work on recruiting volunteers to match with the over 100 children currently on the waiting list. 70 percent of these children are young boys.
“Unfortunately there are potentially many more children that are hesitant to request mentors because of the intimidating waiting list and potential wait times” said Deanna Gamble, PR Officer for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saint John.
This 1 Year 100 Men campaign will help to inform potential volunteers of what is required to become a Mentor and hopefully eliminate any misconceptions that mentoring is too time consuming.
“Many people think that you have to parent these kids or that it will be a burden, when actually it can be quite the opposite. To become a mentor is to become a friend and can actually benefit your life more than you would think,” Gamble said.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saint John serves over 200 children and youth from Hampton to St. Stephen.
To become involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters please call #635-1145.

PALS (Partners Assisting Local Schools)
PALS (Partners Assisting Local Schools) is an exciting initiative of School District 8 in partnership with the local business community and service agencies. It partners interested groups with local schools to provide support primarily in the form of volunteers.
Volunteers are the backbone of all PALS business-education partnerships. Employers contribute by freeing up employees to volunteer for up to one hour during the work week at their partner school. All volunteers are provided with screening, training and an orientation in preparation for their involvement.
Employers report that their employees feel they are getting back much more than they give after spending time with their young friends – whether as coaches, mentors, reading buddies, or breakfast volunteers to name but a few ways of being involved! It is definitely a win-win situation!
There are presently 16 PALS schools in School District 8. Each school identifies its volunteer needs and we try to partner either individuals or groups that can help fill that need. Some are in the initial stages of establishing PALS.
